Mattresses

Innerspring

Traditionally, mattress have been made of metal coils, foam, and fabric.  They are still the most common type of mattress sold today.  Innerspring mattresses consist of a coil system to provide the support, and foam and fabric to provide the comfort.  Innerspring mattresses can be any feel, from very firm to very plush, depending on the amount and type of padding placed atop the innerspring unit.  Don’t get hung up on coil counts!  There are many different types of innerspring systems out today, from open coil and offset coils to individually pocketed, and zoned coil systems.  There are also many different gauges of coil, from a thin 16 gauge to a thick 12 ¾ gauge.  Some coils are compressed, some double tempered for strength, and others laced together to share the weight load.  Unfortunately, simplifying it down to just a coil count isn’t as useful as it used to be.  The most important thing to remember is that it’s a combination of the amount of coils, their gauge, their design, and their construction in the bed that will determine how the bed will support you and how long it will last.

Memory Foam

The newest option in mattresses, memory foam is quickly gaining popularity as a great compromise between support and comfort.  Visco elastic memory foam offers superior conformability, and cushions your every curve for unprecedented pressure relief.  It responds to both body heat and weight, keeping your spine in its most natural position.   Since memory foam increases circulation by decreasing pressure points, tossing and turning is decreased, which not only promotes deeper sleep, but also reduces stress on the back.  Memory foam is excellent for those with fibromyalgia, arthritis, back pain, or anyone that has a hard time getting comfortable on traditional mattresses.  As an added benefit, memory foam is antimicrobial, antibacterial, and immune to dust mites.  Memory foam beds also have the best motion separation – partners don’t feel each other moving in the bed.  Finally, you’ll find that most memory foam mattresses offer longer warranties, as they are more resistant to sagging than innerspring mattresses.

Latex

Latex, similar in function to memory foam, is quickly gaining popularity as a luxurious and supportive sleeping surface.  Latex offers superior pressure relief, eliminating pressure points and decreasing tossing and turning for a deeper, more restorative sleep.  It’s ventilated, and tends to sleep cooler than many other foam beds.  The main difference between memory foam and latex is feel.  Memory foam is a slow sink, while latex is more bouncy and has a quicker reaction.  Those who like the idea of memory foam, but want a feel similar to a traditional innerspring are ideal for latex.  Latex mattresses often carry extended warranties against sagging, due to them being incredibly resilient and long-lasting.  Latex is also naturally antimicrobial, dust mite resistant, and hypoallergenic.

Air

Can’t agree on a mattress?  What about air?  For those partners who cannot compromise on a feel, or for those sleepers who want a different experience every night, air is ideal.  Air beds consist of a base, an air chamber (or two), and a few padding layers on top.  The air chambers are attached by hoses to a pump and a remote, so the sleeper can pump up or deflate their mattress as they choose.  Air mattresses come in all sizes, and are available with dual chambers in queen, king, and California king sizes.  There are different qualities of air chamber, pump, and different layers of cushioning on top of the air chambers.  Air mattresses are the only beds that you can buy parts for…you’ll never have to buy another bed!
